New Patients and FAQs
Do I need a referral from my doctor?
In Washington, physical therapists are able to see patients without a referral from a doctor. However, many insurance plans still require a referral before being seen by a physical therapist. If your insurance plan requires a referral, then we will need a copy of this before or at your first appointment. If your insurance plan does not require a referral, then we are happy to see you without a referral. If you're unsure if your insurance requires a referral, feel free to give us a call and we can find out for you!
What do I need to bring with me to my first appointment?
Please bring identification and your health insurance card, as we’ll need a copy of them to bill your insurance. If there is any information that you feel would be helpful for your physical therapist, you are welcome to bring it. Otherwise, just bring yourself! We will ask you to move around somewhat during your evaluation (as physical therapists are the “movement experts”), so please wear something comfortable that you are able to move around in.
What will we do during my physical therapy appointments?
At your first visit, we will start with a comprehensive discussion about what brings you into the clinic, your symptoms, medical history, and your goals for physical therapy. We like to get as complete of a picture as we can so we can address your symptoms from every angle. Next, your physical therapist will perform an examination of the relevant body regions to determine the likely cause of your symptoms. By the time you leave your appointment, you will have an understanding of the cause of your symptoms and a few exercises or activities to start to reduce these symptoms. In future visits, we will continue to re-evaluate your symptoms to adjust your treatment and plan of care as needed to reach your goals.
As a postpartum mom, when should I come in for physical therapy?
We often see patient for their first visit around 6 weeks postpartum, however, we are happy and able to see you as soon as you feel up for it. We will start with very gentle activities to help you recover more quickly and thoroughly following childbirth.
Should I reschedule if I have my period?
Most often, it is not necessary to reschedule due to your menstrual cycle. Your physical therapist may even be able to reduce some of the pain and cramping associated with your cycle!
How often will I have an appointment and how many visits will I need?
It depends! Every patient has their own unique symptom presentation, history, and goal for physical therapy, and PT is not a one size fits all treatment. Often patients will begin by seeing their therapist 1-2 times per week for 3-6 weeks, then begin to taper in future weeks to one visit per 2-4 weeks, though this is very dependent on the condition and progress with the treatments.
